As the saying goes, “drive for show, putt for dough.” The best way to shave strokes off of your disc golf game is by improving your putting. The best way to improve putting is by routine practice putting with your own personal disc golf practice basket.
These days there are lots of different disc golf targets to choose from. With the rapid growth of disc golf the good ones don’t always stay in stock for very long.
In this article we will recommend ten different disc golf baskets and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. When considering which basket to buy, you should consider:
Your intended uses. Are you looking for something that will be portable? Are you looking for a disc golf target that is budget friendly? Are you looking for something that will withstand the elements if you keep it outside? Do you want a basket that will help you hone in your putting accuracy, or is it more important to get a target that will catch all your putts thus improving your confidence?
If improving your putting is the most important thing in the world to you, then rather than get a portable basket, it might actually best to get a course basket. Many course baskets are actually available with portable bases. These are substantially more expensive and heavier, but will give you the true disc golf feel. However, we will save course baskets for another article and will discuss some of the best portable disc golf basket options.

1. Viking Discs Royal Basket
When it comes to value, in my opinion the Viking Discs Royal basket is the best portable disc golf basket on the market right now. This quality basket weighs 42 pounds and is made of solid powder coated steel.
The Royal basket is a full sized portable target that features a 24 chain configuration. 18 of the chains surround the outer perimeter while a smaller inner ring features 6 chains. While these chains are not quite as heavy as a course basket, they are indeed thicker and heavier than most of the portable baskets on the market. These heavy duty chains and quality configuration give the Royal basket a course like catching feel — a must have for fast spin putts.
In addition to the superb catching ability, unlike the MVP 24 chain targets, the Viking basket has a nice deep tray. I like to practice putt with a dozen putters at once, and the deep tray of the Royal basket is able to catch them all without your made putts bouncing out.
The Royal basket is the best choice for back yard practice puttering and it also works well as a portable basket. This basket features screwable wing nuts and easily collapses into five pieces. This works well for creating a temporary course or adding additional holes for a tournament layout. The Royal basket is PDGA approved for Standard play.
If you’re looking for the best value on an all purpose quality portable disc golf basket, consider the Viking Discs Royal.
- 24 Heavy Duty Chains
- Deep Catching Tray
- Powder Coated Steel Frame
- Easy to assemble and disassemble
- Ample space in the basket
- Heavier and not as portable as other targets.
- Typically sells quickly and is not always available in the US.
2. MVP Black Hole Practice 24 chain
The MVP Black Hole Practice 24 is quite a sturdy option and it will catch discs just the way your basket at the local course will. It comes with 12 inner and 12 outer chains (zinc coated light duty chains) which are placed equidistant from each other. The equidistant placement ensures that the pole is not bouncy and it reduces cut through. It is made from a sturdy material of metal yet it is quite portable. The height and size of the basket will make it easy for you to put it in your car if disabled properly.
The entire unit meets PDGA specifications, which gives the basket a realistic look; the kind that belongs in the course. The best part about this basket is how easily you can disable it. The first thing you will likely look for in a home course basket is its ability to port so that you can place it only when you need it. And for that, MVP Black Hole Practice 24 is an ideal option.
MVP disc golf basket comes with an instruction guide, but it is so easy to use that you would not need one. The only drawback of the basket is that you cannot use it outdoors, as it is not weather resistant. You will certainly notice a slight wear and tear and the paint fading if you keep it out for a longer period.
- PDGA approved
- Uniquely engineered design
- Two sets of 12 zinc coated chains
- Easy to assemble- in less than a minute
- Premium quality for the price range
- Not weather resistant, can easily wear out
- Putts sometimes “bounce” out.
3. Innova Discatcher Sport 18 Chain
They are easily portable and you can set it up at home for either practicing or putting a game of horse with your friend. You can easily take the basket to camps and treks and play disc golf wherever you want to. It features 18 external power coated chains and 6 internal chains which reduces cut through putts. These are galvanized chains which makes it one of the most efficient baskets to practice disc golf.
They come with only 5 parts making the assembling process easy and less time taking. All you need is a screwdriver to put up the basket and you are ready to go. They are PDGA approved and the best part about the basket is that they are weather proof. It will show no signs of rust even when they are exposed to external weather.
The basket is completely made of metal and features strong chains and a stable base. The drawback is that it does not come with two sets of chain, this means that the disc can sometimes fly through without falling in. But, you get the facility of adding more chains if you want.
- It is completely made of metal
- Regulation size is PDGA approved
- Easy to assemble and reassemble
- Design is sturdy and durable
- Has one set of metal chain
4. Viking Disc Polar Golf Basket Goal
The Polar basket is mostly full sized. It is made for regular sized golf discs (unlike some baskets made specifically for mini baskets) yet is slightly smaller than other practice baskets which allow it to be lighter weight and less expensive. Polar baskets are perfect for setting up a short temporary course for kids.
Like with most things, you get what you pay for. The Polar basket presents a target you can aim for during your practice putting routines, but don’t expect it to catch all of the putts. The light weight chains are very flimsy, even with the cross chain structure. The tray is incredibly shallow and it’s not uncommon for loft putts to bounce out, even if there are no other putters in the tray. If you’re putting multiple putters at once, most of them will fall out of the basket once they start piling up.
The Viking Polar basket is so light weight (only 10 pounds) that you can literally knock the basket over if you hit it high with a powerful enough putt. The small size and ultra light weight make it super easy to move around and adjust temporary courses.
If you have a budget and are just looking for a cheap disc golf basket consider the Polar. Otherwise invest in one of the more quality targets that we recommend here.
- Low price
- Easily portable and ultra lightweight
- Great for creating temporary courses for kids
- Super Flimsy Chains
- Ultra Shallow Tray
- Not Full Size
5. Viking Battle Frisbee Disc Golf Basket
The Battle basket is light weight and weighs 20 pounds. It is roughly half the weight of the Royal basket but twice the weight of the Polar. The light weight of this basket make it easy to move around and great for temporary courses. The cross chain configuration does a good job at catching putts as long as you don’t putt to hard and there are no other discs piled up in the tray.
Coming in at less than $100, the Battle basket makes our classification as a budget basket. It is better quality than the other budget baskets on our list, but does not offer the same experience as a more expensive, heavier, durable baskets. The tray of the Battle basket is rather small and it does this basket does not work well for practicing with multiple putters at once.
If you’re looking for a budget basket that is light weight, easy to move around, and will better withstand weather than cloth baskets, consider the Battle .
- Easily portable
- Highly stable despite the fact that it is lightweight
- Assembly and reassembly is simple
- Does not handle hard putts well
- Shallow Tray
- Not PDGA Approved
6. Axiom Discs Pro 24-Chain Disc Golf Basket
The unit is made of high-quality steel and it comes with high stability so you can easily place the target on the ground, no matter how the surface is. The model is PDGA approved and built keeping in mind the PDGA size and height regulations. The body of the basket is uniquely designed enabling you to assemble and reassemble the basket parts easily. Assembly will hardly take you a minute or so, which is the best part about Axiom Discs Pro 24-Chain Disc Golf Basket.
The high quality materials used in the basket enables it to stand firm and catch discs even when you throw them simultaneously. They also come in different other colors such as red, gold, white, etc. It will give a realistic experience, the kind you get when you play in the course. Another important feature of the basket is that it comes with 12 inner and 12 outer chains which are placed equidistant from each other. The equidistant placement ensures that the pole is not bouncy and it reduces cut through.
- Can be assembled within minutes
- Uniquely engineered design
- Amazing off-course experience
- Regulation size and is PDGA approved
- Comes with a course sized basket
- Heavy weight
7. MVP Black Hole Pro 24 Chain
It comes with 12 inner and 12 outer chains which are placed equidistant from each other. The chains are heavy-duty zinc coated which reduces “cut through” and “pole bounce”. These 24 chains ensure high stability so there is a great chance that the galvanized disc golf basket will catch your disc if you throw it accurately.
The unit is PDGA approved and totally in line with the height and size regulation. The diameter of the target is 25.5 inches and for inner and outer it is- 15” and 21”. Though it is designed as a portable target but it also features a realistic look. The weight of the unit is somewhere around 25 pounds and the model is quite sturdy and durable. The entire unit is made of metal and joints are secured at several places.
It is no joke when I tell you that apart from all these heavy loaded features, the basket only takes a minute or so to set up. You will not require additional tools for the setup.
The only drawback that I could find was that the golf basket comes in a single color, which is black. So if you are playing outdoors, then you can face visibility issues. Another problem is that it does not come with a wind revealing flag, which again adds up to the visibility issue.
- Amazing on-course experience
- High-quality metal frame
- Durable and sturdy design
- Assembling and reassembling is easy
- Two sets of 12 zinc coated chains.
- PDGA approved
- Visibility is dull
- Color choice is limited
- High priced compared to other models
- Not good for permanent setups
8. Innova DISCatcher Traveler Target
The lightweight and easy installation and reinstallation makes this disc golf basket an ideal choice for school goers and youth camps. The weight of the entire basket is somewhere around 15 pounds. You can tell how easy it will be to move around the basket. It will only take a minute or so to set up. The best part about this Innova basket is that it ensures high stability even on unleveled grounds. If you like your basket colorful and compact, then look no further. The DisCatcher comes in various colors including blue, red, and yellow, along with similar colored bags.
When you anchor the target on the ground, it can tolerate moderate winds and also irregular surfaces. The best thing is that it is light in weight. But, if I had to list one drawback, then that will also be its low weight. Since it is lightweight, the basket can get wobbly at times when you land a shot. It comes with 12 steel chains that follow the regulation size.
- Lightweight and compact, travel-friendly
- Different colors
- Setup is easy
- Unique design
- The target might move as you land a shot
- Smaller target area and does not catch very well
9. Franklin Sports Disc Golf Set
I would only recommend the Franklin complete disc golf set with basket if you are just looking for something cheap. The quality of this basket is atrocious, but it does still give you a target to aim at. If your goal is just to have something to focus your putts on, that you’re not concerned about lasting a long time, then this would be something.
This one offers a complete set of products including the disc golf basket, three golf discs and a carrying bag. Everything you need for making a product travel-friendly. This one is usually used by families for outdoor events such as get-together, picnics, barbeques, camping, etc. Note that while this set comes with both a disc golf basket and discs, the discs should probably go straight to the garbage bin.
It makes for one of the best yard games. The best part of the product design is that it comes in an umbrella shape which adds to the portability. This unique design will save you a lot of time and effort as you can easily pack and unpack the basket. When we talk about the storage, after you assemble the unit fully, it will contract into a very compact size making it perfect for storage as it will take very little space.
This complete disc golf set is also incredibly light weight. The best thing I like about this product is how easily one can carry it around. Teenagers can carry it even with one arm and if you are going on a trip you can easily stuff the bag in your car. It features sturdy legs which ensure high stability. The setup is quite easy because the umbrella design allows simplicity in folding the bag allowing you to play almost anywhere you want.
The bright colors of the disc help in improving the visibility of the disc so, you do not have to worry about game time any more. In short, this golf basket set is everything you need if you’re only looking to consider disc golf as a game and not a sport.
- All-in-one Budget set
- Set up is very simple
- Portability level is high
- Comes with a carry bag
- Good for an ultra casual disc golfer
- Basket does not catch putts well
- Built in a cheap design and poor quality
- Discs are made of poor quality
- Not for serious disc golfers
10. DGA Mach Lite Portable Disc Golf Practice Basket
This one is quite similar to the Innova DisCatcher we had discussed about earlier. The weight is almost the same, which is around 25 pounds. It is incredibly lightweight and ensures easily portability. But, a lot of you might be thinking that if the unit is light in weight then it must not be made of good quality metal. This is not true in the case of DGA Mach Lite.
It follows the regulation size and height and offers a great on-course experience. The discs are made of premium quality and the target makes perfect yard practice. It is extremely portable and you can foldup the basket easily making it travel friendly. The target yet again is portable and makes for easy transportation.
You will find that the other foldable discs in the market are made of cheap quality which might break soon, but with DGA Mach Lite you get high-quality foldable target. If you are looking to invest in a disc golf basket which will last long, then this is an ideal option for you. It is also weather resistant as the chains are coated with zinc so that they don’t catch rust or corrosion. Even the nylon basket is created using rugged nylon which ensures UV resistance. So, you will not have to think before taking the disc basket to beaches , outdoor places and temporary courses.
The size of the Mach Lite basket is the same as the one you will find on the course, but it definitely does not catch with the same consistency. If you putt hard and with a lot of spin, putts will regularly blow through the basket and miss. Because of the cloth makeup of the basket tray, you can also make low putts when you otherwise would have missed.
- Light Weight and Ultra portable
- Folding option is simple
- Sturdy and durable construction
- It follows regulation size
- Comes with a carrying bag and shoulder strap
- Not made for prolonged use outdoors
- Doesn’t catch as well as an all metal basket
How to Choose a Disc Golf Basket?
Now that you have information about all the best portable disc golf baskets available in the market, it is time to discuss some factors to consider to ensure you choose one that is best for you. Out of all the options mentioned above, it can get confusing as to which one to buy. It is no surprise that you are having a hard time deciding which one to settle with.
A basket will only ensure that your game is getting strong day by and day and you are improving your putting technique if you actually use it. There are so many things you will have to keep in check, your budget, the portability and transportation, weight, and catchability. So, let us start with these points and then you can make a decision.
The first and foremost thing to keep in your mind is budget. How much are you willing to spend? You will find different varieties of disc golf basket in the market ranging at different price levels. From expensive to cheap, there is everything out there. Many of the midrange baskets like the Axiom Lite and Viking Royal basket work almost as well as some of the more expensive practice targets.
If your goal is just to have a target, any target, a point of focus to get repetitions in, then the cost of the basket doesn’t really matter as all disc golf baskets provide a target. If you plan to use your practice basket for temporary courses, then you will want to choose one with a good catchability score. If you plan to putt with multiple putters at once, you’ll want a basket with a deep tray, otherwise, even when you make putts they will fall out.
While all the disc golf baskets we mentioned above are portable, some are more portable than others. Only three of our 2021 recommended baskets actually fold up with a carry basket.
Foldable are portable baskets which can be folded easily. You can simply collapse the basket down and fold it so that it can easily fit inside the carry bag. It’s kind of like opening and closing an umbrella. They are extremely light weight and you can carry it around with ease. The best part is that you can collapse it down and slip it into a sack bag without any trouble.
So, if you are the kind who likes to practice outdoors at beautiful scenic locations, then foldable baskets are something you should look out for. Many of these foldable baskets are even PDGA approved which can be great if you want to keep them as temporary baskets for tournaments.
I think the DGA Match Lite can fit in really well in this category. They are lightweight, foldable and easy to transport. Of the foldable options, this basket has the best chain configuration for actually catching putts.
If your objective for purchasing a practice basket is to improve your putting technique and accuracy, then this is one type of disc golf basket you should consider. Narrow or smaller targets can help in training your mind but they are not good for catching discs. Since they are not good for catching discs, you cannot use it for tournaments.
These are only meant for practice purpose, so if you are still in the learning stage then buy a basket that is good for narrow and smaller targets. But, keep one thing in mind that when you are using a smaller target, there are chances that you will miss a lot more hits. Even though people know that the missed putts will be successful when they are using a bigger basket, seeing a successful shot can be motivating.
As the name suggests, these are lighter and slimmer version of heavy baskets. Light-duty baskets do not have a lot of chains and are less expensive compared to the heavier version. So, if you are looking for something that has all the features a heavy-duty basket has except for the weight, then light-duty baskets are an ideal choice. They are not as travel friendly as foldable cloth baskets, but can quickly collapse and be stored in the trunk of your car.
Few and light chains can lead to more putt misses and spit outs. If you are on a budget, then go for a light-duty disc golf basket. If you don’t want to be frustrated by missed putts when you actually make them, then you probably want to skip the low budget light-duty disc golf goals.
Heavy-duty baskets are the closest you can find to professional course baskets. They will give you on-course experience and help you practice for tournaments and leagues. If you are looking for a basket that will give on field experience but in a reasonable price range, then opt for a heavy-duty basket. Galvanized disc golf basket is permanent and made from premium quality metal. They are durable and sturdy and are perfect for public disc golf courses. Since they can take a lot of use and abuse they can be used as a permanent basket. There are a few companies which deal with heavy-duty baskets including DGA and Innova.
If you are looking for a basket that will give an authentic feel, then it is important to consider if they feel realistic or not. A lot of people prefer their golf disc basket to look realistic as it helps in improving their game. For this, you will have to focus on the dimensions of the basket and check if they are PDGA approved or not. If you are still confused, then check for the number of chains a basket has. If it has 24 chains then it has met the regulation standards. While the number of chains may resemble those found on courses, the weight of the chains on portable baskets is substantially less and so these baskets still have a different catch feel.
All portable disc golf baskets fold up so that they generally fit in the tray area when disassembled. But this does not make all baskets of equal portability. When we talk about the portability of the disc goal, one thing you should also look out for is the weight of the basket. A lot of portable disc goals can be heavy which will make it difficult for to transport. I’ve thrown my back out before by picking up a heavy Lightning basket off the ground.
You will find a wide range of weighing options even in portable disc nets, so choose the one that fits your requirement. The light weight ones can be carried around easily and can fit in a backpack easily. If you are looking for a portable disc golf basket which is lightweight then avoid the ones that are made from metal because they will be bulky in weight.
In addition some portable baskets have bolts and screws that need to be undone to collapse the basket. Others have wing nuts that make the process smoother. Some baskets can be taken apart and reassembled without any nuts, bolts or screws.
Material of the Basket
Yet again, material of the basket will define its weight and durability. The ones that are made from mixed material such as mesh fabric or metal will be lighter in weight. They will also be easy to move around and you can stuff them in your car easily. But again, they do not assure durability and will quickly wear out, especially when left outdoors for extended periods of time. On the other hand, baskets made from metal and steel can be heavy and are more difficult to move around, but these baskets catch better. Metal baskets can be left in your back yard for extended periods of time and will endure for many years.

How does a disc golf basket work?
The disc golf baskets are the most crucial part of any disc gold course. It has the same function as that of the golf holes in case of traditional golf. The hole is taken as complete when the thrown flying disc touches the chains, and then, falls into the basket. The score of the player gets added up by counting the number of throws that it takes for that disc to come to rest in the disc golf basket.
You can get both permanent and portable disc golf baskets in the market. The permanent disc golf baskets are available on the disc golf courses and the portable ones are set up in schools, universities, backyards, and camps. The leagues, recreation, and classes use both portable and permanent disc golf baskets.
How to move portable disc golf basket?
The portable disc golf basket are either heavy duty or ultra-light. You can leave the heavy duty metal baskets outdoors without worrying about the weather. You can make the lightest weight baskets collapse, and then, stuff it into the carrying cases. Slung the case over your shoulder and take the basket anywhere you want. It is advisable to not leave the lighter ones outside for a long period of time.
The ease of storage is what makes the portable disc baskets great for a trip to the beach, backyard, or any other place where you want to set up a temporary course.
When you want to take your disc golf game to the next level and improve your putting, a portable disc golf basket is a must have.
